Charles Phipps: Theatre Architect 1835-1897

Charles Phipps was born in 1835 in Landsdowne near Bath. He was articled to Wilcox and Fuller, architects and later in 1858 formed his own practice.

Phipps was the first of the great Victorian theatre architects and for over 30 years was the leader in his field.

The main body of Phipps work was produced pre 1890 and were mainly "straight" theatres. Even Phipps Music Halls were restrained affairs in composition in comparison to the exuberance of Frank Matcham and Bertie Crewe.

Phipps, in conjunction with local Aberdeen Architect James Matthews, designed the Tivoli Theatre in 1872. His design was later altered by Frank Matcham in 1897 and again in 1909.

Recent research on the Tivoli suggests that much of Phipps' design, although much modified can still be seen throughout the theatre.
