Recent research has uncovered some exciting existing under stage machinery at the Tivoli. The remains of star traps, elevators and even the gas supply to the ‘floats’ have all been recently uncovered.
We now have photographs of the original Phipps auditorium and façade and an image of the dress circle staircase revealed some rather grand balustrade buried under the wooden cladding of the 1938 renovation. We have managed to uncover a section of the original staircase.
A scrap of original Matcham wallpaper in the auditorium and the discovery of an original ‘pit bench’ still covered with velvet material may indicate that the original Matcham colour scheme was based on turquoise and gold palette. A full investigation including paint scrapings will be undertaken during the Conservation Management survey.
